My time ~ My Choice ~

In my 17 years advising people how to retire, they always stated that they hate that word retirement!

I have seen people have physical reactions to the word “retirement”

Why is this?

From all my conversations, it is that those retiring don’t want to feel “old”…

However, diving deeper into this, retirement has several conations I have learned over the years, including retreatment, withdrawing, to withdraw from life, to being old and even close to the end of your life. Many that are looking to retire do not see themselves in this light. They are not withdrawing from life, they feel great. With their years of experience and knowledge to rely on, they are looking to enjoy their time rather then being chained to a desk and on the clock.

For many retirement means choice, freedom, flexibility, and time. Time to do the things they love and spend time with the people they love.

Time and time again, I hear people talk about the need for a new word and I’ve heard everything from re-wirement, encore, next stage, next phase, and the list goes on.

Over the years we have been thinking about many other words we could use to replace retirement and all the feelings and preconceived ideas…

There were many words that were discussed…

Including:

  • leisure

  • holiday

  • next phase

  • unemployment

  • relief

  • freedom

  • rest

  • peace

  • recess

  • decompression

  • time off

  • A spell

  • time out

  • spare moment

  • closure

  • beginning

  • me time

All these terms are interesting because people have all along been searching for the wrong type of replacement.

What many need and what has been sitting right in front of them for years is a simple term that relieves them from the idea of feeling old, incapable, out-of-touch, or withdrawn.

My time… not mai tai… but my time!

As for the past 40-50 years it was always someone else’s time.

Growing up - it was your parents time and schedule.

Family life - as you have a family, you are on your kids schedule doing everything you can for them, sport, doctors, friends, parties, school etc.

Working life - it was always on your employers schedule.

Now it is mai tai - it is your time to have the freedom, time and money to do what you love, without constraints

However, when considering mai tai many start asking the following questions

  • When can I retire?

  • How much do I need to retire?

  • How long will my capital last?

  • What government benefits can I receive?

  • How can I plan my retirement?

So if you are moving into retirement and wondering if you need financial advice?

Give our team a call to discuss your options and ensure you are able to enjoy my time with mai tai’s.
