The following stats outline the gap many self employed people face:

  • 25% of self-employed workers don’t have any super

  • The average super balance of a 60 year old self employed worker is $129,000, whilst for someone who is employed the balance is much higher at $288,000.


We continue to see similar themes of people aged between 57-61 who come to us for financial advice.

  • They have superannuation balances under $300,000

  • They have a mortgage of approximately $300,000

  • They are looking to retire in the next 5 years

  • They do not have a plan as to how they will repay their mortgage & generate an income once retired.

Case Study One:

Peter & Emma are both 61 years of age.

They own a concrete business, with Peter employing 15 people full time & Emma looking after the accounts.

Unfortunately 5 years ago they purchased a forklift business & went bankrupt.

Their accountant for the past 15 years had provided the due diligence & didn’t pick up that the financial records did not match the bank statements. There were two sets of accounts. They lost their home, cars & “superannuation”. Their accountant had recommended that they establish a CBA savings account & call it superannuation.
